KIDS
Buying your child’s initial (or subsequent) bike can be a delightful experience—but with all of the varying sizes and models available, it can also be confusing. The most important thing to remember when choosing a bike is that it should be the right size for your kid’s height because this will determine his or her comfort level, confidence, and safety on the bike.
Cycling is joint-friendly, low-impact, and wonderful for both body and mind. You can make it as easy or as difficult as you like—whether riding around the neighbourhood, commuting to work, or training for a longer journey.
Why Bike Size is Important
Too large or too small a bike may make it painful and even unsafe for children to ride. Contrary to frame-sized adult bikes, children’s bikes are sized by wheel diameter. The ideal size will allow your child to place their feet on the ground, ride smoothly, and ride confidently.
Whereas parents use age to estimate, height is a very reliable measure.
The following is a chart guide of which wheel size is best for which range of heights, according to the chart:
- Have them ride the bike if at all possible. Make sure they can sit comfortably on the saddle and have access to the handlebars and brakes without strain.
- Look for adjustable components. Adjustable seats and handlebars allow the bike to be able to grow with your child a little while longer.
- Check the weight of the bike. A light bike is easier for children to handle, particularly for beginners.
- Don’t purchase a bike to “grow into.” This can dissuade your child from using the bike if it is not comfortable or safe.
- Seek out safety features. Coaster brakes (pedal brakes) might be useful for young children, while hand brakes help older children develop skills needed for adult bikes.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Choosing the right size bike will make your child’s bike riding experience fun, safe and empowering. Remember: the better the fit, the safer your child will feel—and the more they’ll enjoy riding!
If you ever find yourself having to make a choice, head on down to your local bike shop and ask for help. Most will be happy to assist you with fitting and give you some advice tailored to your child’s needs.
